Uljanik Shipyard

Throughout the years, Croatia itself has been under control of many other nations. Uljanik was founded in 1856 by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and within 2 years completed its first ship, the SMS Kaiser, completed on October 5, 1858. It manufactured over 50 ships for the Austro-Hungarian Navy, and from 1918 to 1943 it was controlled by Italians. During this time it was used for repairing, docking and cutting old ships. For a short period they were held by Germans and then Yugoslavia until their independence was declared. From 1947 to 1998 they delivered over 194 newbuildings, to buyers from all continents.

Uljanik’s ability to remain flexible has allowed for them to remain a competitor in the global market. Although they have been dominated by other countries in the past, they have withstood the test of time. After making multi-million dollar technological investments in the late 1990s – early 2000s, they have lined themselves up for a successful and sustainable future in a niche market.
